Description

Point count data collected at the Maya Golden Landscape (Bladen Nature Reserve, Golden Stream Corridor Preserve and Columbia River Forest Reserve) by Ya'axche Conservation Trust. Data was collected from January 2010 to December 2016.

Data Records

The data in this occurrence resource has been published as a Darwin Core Archive (DwC-A), which is a standardized format for sharing biodiversity data as a set of one or more data tables. The core data table contains 6,342 records.

This IPT archives the data and thus serves as the data repository. The data and resource metadata are available for download in the downloads section. The versions table lists other versions of the resource that have been made publicly available and allows tracking changes made to the resource over time.

Geographic Coverage

The Maya Golden Landscape focuses on the effective management of whole landscapes, not just protected areas. The boundaries are based on the focus of Ya'axche's work but also include private lands, surrounding protected areas, freshwater and marine systems. The areas surveyed include Golden Stream Corridor Preserve, Columbia River Forest Reserve and Bladen Nature Reserve which are all lowland broadleaf forest and broadleaf hill forest; and Indian Creek Village which is an urban area and consists of agriculture and shrubland.

Project Data

This project aims to compile and analyze several large existing bird datasets of Belize and to disseminate the results to decision-makers and the public. The UB ERI will coordinate the mobilization of Belize's existing un-compiled bird data through eBird and the GBIF network. This will be done in collaboration with two main partners: the Forest Department (FD), the regulatory agency responsible for enforcing policies and regulations for sustainable management of its natural resources and Belize Audubon Society (BAS), a non-governmental organization that co-manages seven protected areas in Belize.

Title Improving Natural Resources Management in Belize through Mobilization of Biodiversity Data
Identifier BID-CA2016-0011-NAC
Funding This project was made possible through the GBIF BID programme.
Study Area Description Data for this project was collected at several locations in Belize including protected areas and private lands. For this particular dataset, data was collected at the Maya Golden Landscape in Southern Belize and is managed by Ya'axche Conservation Trust.
Design Description Partners/stakeholders were contacted to assist in contributing digitized and un-digitized bird data toward this project. Data Sharing Agreements were signed between the UB ERI and partners before data was utilized and submitted.

Sampling Methods

The data was collected using the point count method. Point counts were conducted at every 200 m interval along 1 km transects that were established in the different study areas. The recorder and observer recorded specific bird species of interest (indicators in migration success, forest health, game hunting and disturbance) that were seen and/or heard for 10 minutes at each point count. In addition, data on weather condition, time, and the date was also recorded. In some areas, multiple transects were established so they were 2 km apart to avoid counting the same bird.

Study Extent Data was collected at the Maya Golden Landscape from January 2010 to December 2016.
Quality Control The surveys were conducted by rangers from the Ya'axche Conservation Trust who possess experience in identifying birds in the field. Identification was cross-checked using the Birds of Belize Book by Lee Jones.

Method step description:

  1. The data was collected using the point count method along transects to record specific bird species of interest.

Additional Metadata

Purpose The dataset was developed based on point count data collected by Ya'axche Conservation Trust. The dataset includes observational data of both resident and migrant species. Having data on birds in Belize will allow information to be generated on diversity, abundance, etc.
Maintenance Description The maintenance frequency is not planned.
