Description

This dataset includes all animal species endemic to Suriname or a part of Suriname. In most cases their distribution is restricted to a mountain range, or in case of fish to a single stream or single drainage area.

Data Records

The data in this checklist resource has been published as a Darwin Core Archive (DwC-A), which is a standardized format for sharing biodiversity data as a set of one or more data tables. The core data table contains 21 records.

This IPT archives the data and thus serves as the data repository. The data and resource metadata are available for download in the downloads section. The versions table lists other versions of the resource that have been made publicly available and allows tracking changes made to the resource over time.

Versions

The table below shows only published versions of the resource that are publicly accessible.

Project Data

The purpose of this project is to make the various collections at the main institutions housing the biodiversity information available digitally through publication and the possible creation of a CariBIF portal for the region (Atlas of Living Caribbean). The Introduced Fauna Suriname Checklist was especially created to supply data for the Atlas of Living Caribbean.

Title Improving Biodiversity data accessibility in the Caribbean countries of Trinidad & Tobago, Barbados and Suriname
Identifier BID-CA2016-0006-REG
Funding This project is made possible through a BID project by GBIF, financed by the European Union.
Study Area Description This project covers Introduced fauna in Suriname observed, collected or mentioned in literature from approximately 1960 till present.
Design Description The goal of this project is to make taxonomic records of the NZCS and biogeographic and ecological research executed in Suriname accessible to all.

Sampling Methods

This data was predominantly collected during expeditions, monitoring surveys or other research activities. In some cases the data was compiled from literature.

Study Extent The data was collected from many areas in Suriname.
Quality Control In some cases the identification of specimens was rechecked by foreign experts.

Method step description:

  1. 1. Specimens that could not be identified to species are sampled and described. 2. When the specimen is proven to be a new species it's range will be determined. When it's range is restricted to only part of Suriname it is considered an endemic species for Suriname. 3. In some cases DNA Barcoding was used to determine the DNA sequence and genetic variation. Morphological variation is studied to determine endemism of the species. 4. The data of the positively identified endemic species was then compiled into a checklist.
