Data Records

The data in this occurrence resource has been published as a Darwin Core Archive (DwC-A), which is a standardized format for sharing biodiversity data as a set of one or more data tables. The core data table contains 15,615 records.

This IPT archives the data and thus serves as the data repository. The data and resource metadata are available for download in the downloads section. The versions table lists other versions of the resource that have been made publicly available and allows tracking changes made to the resource over time.

Project Data

This project aims to compile and analyze several large existing bird dataset of Belize and to disseminate the results to decision-makers and the public. The UB ERI will coordinate the mobilization of Belize's existing un-compiled bird data through eBird and the GBIF network. This will be done in collaboration with two main partners: the Forest Department, the regulatory agency responsible for enforcing policies and regulations for sustainable management of its natural resources and Belize Audubon Society (BAS), a non-governmental organization that co-manages seven protected areas in Belize.

Title Improving Natural Resources Management in Belize through Mobilization of Biodiversity Data
Identifier BID-CA2016-0011-NAC
Funding This project was made possible through the GBIF BID programme.
Study Area Description Data for this project was collected at several locations in Belize including protected areas and private lands. For this particular dataset, data was collected at Chaa Creek Lodge on its private reserve located in the Cayo District. The field survey was conducted by the Foundation for Wildlife Conservation (formerly known as Birds Without Borders).
Design Description Partners/stakeholders were contacted to assist in contributing digitized and un-digitized bird data toward this project. Data Sharing Agreements were signed between the UB ERI and partners before data was utilized and submitted.

Sampling Methods

The data collection followed the point count method. Point counts were conducted at 100 m intervals along a transect of 800 m to 1000 m. A total of 60 points were established. At each interval/point count, the recorded and observer recorded all species seen and/or heard for 10 minutes. The number of individuals of that species was also recorded along with other information such as the date, start and end time, and weather conditions.

Study Extent Data was collected at Chaa Creek Lodge in Belize from November 1997 to July 2001.
Quality Control The surveys were conducted by field staff who possessed experience with identification of birds. Identification guides were also used to verify identification.

Method step description:

  1. This dataset was collected using the point count methodology along a transect.

Additional Metadata

Purpose This dataset was developed based on point count data collected at Chaa Creek Lodge. The dataset includes observational data of both migrant and resident species. Having data on birds in Belize will allow information to be generated on abundance, diversity, etc.
Maintenance Description The maintenance frequency is not planned
