Description
The MRC Dataset is an occurrence dataset of preserved marine specimens that have been collected from various research projects over IMA's 45 years in existence. Most of the specimens were collected in Trinidad and Tobago's marine space. Some were collected in Venezuelan waters.
Data Records
The data in this occurrence resource has been published as a Darwin Core Archive (DwC-A), which is a standardized format for sharing biodiversity data as a set of one or more data tables. The core data table contains 673 records.
This IPT archives the data and thus serves as the data repository. The data and resource metadata are available for download in the downloads section. The versions table lists other versions of the resource that have been made publicly available and allows tracking changes made to the resource over time.
Versions
The table below shows only published versions of the resource that are publicly accessible.

Project Data
This data is a part of the Institute of Marine Affairs' (IMA) aim of developing a centralized Marine Biodiversity Hub (MBH) for the purpose of (1) effective dissemination of data on the state of marine ecosystems in T&T to research partners, civil society, decision-makers, and the international community, and (2) building capacity for more integrative research collaborations and creating sustainable partnerships through data sharing for research, management, and conservation.

Study Area Description | The study area of research at the Institute of Marine Affairs (IMA) is mainly focused on the waters of Trinidad and Tobago's Exclusive Economic Zone (TT EEZ) with some past projects covering marine species in Venezuela, St. Lucia, St. Vincent, and the Grenadines, and Grenada. Marine biodiversity data has been collected by the IMA since 1977 and the volume of data collected continues to grow each year. |
Design Description | January 1, 1978 - December 31, 2006 |
Sampling Methods
Various methods have been used to capture these specimens, trawling, cast net, hook and line, seine, and by hand.
Study Extent | The sampling locations have within the EEZ of Trinidad and Tobago and the waters off Venezuela. |

Method step description:
- Photos were taken of the Digitization of the Marine Reference Collection 1. Print and cut ID cards on waterproof paper. 2. Dry specimens in trays and using paper towels. 3. Prepare the work area to pin specimens down. 4. Place rulers both vertically and horizontally. 5. Pin the specimen down in the desired orientation. 6. Count/record the specimens present in each jar. 7. Photograph the whole specimen with identification. 8. Photograph the whole specimen with an Identification and description card. 9. Photograph close-up images for smaller specimens/distinguishable features/unique features etc. 10. Place the specimen back with ID and description card. *Use digital editing software such as Adobe Light Room, Sketchbook, or equivalent to edit/enhance/clean images. 11. Naming convention must follow: “IMA-MRC-ACT-“ORDER”-“FAMILY”-“1, 2, 3…”
