Description
This data set includes occurrence records of the stygobitic crustaceans from Sicilian groundwater (Italy). The columns report the updated taxon name, additional taxonomical information along with origin of the data, and habitat type (e.g., cave, catacomb, gallery, hyporheos, interstitial, spring, well).
Data Records
The data in this occurrence resource has been published as a Darwin Core Archive (DwC-A), which is a standardized format for sharing biodiversity data as a set of one or more data tables. The core data table contains 87 records.
This IPT archives the data and thus serves as the data repository. The data and resource metadata are available for download in the downloads section. The versions table lists other versions of the resource that have been made publicly available and allows tracking changes made to the resource over time.
Versions
The table below shows only published versions of the resource that are publicly accessible.

Geographic Coverage
Study area: Sicilian groundwater (Italy), including smaller islands and archipelagos. Data are georeferenced according to WGS 84 datum. Bounding box: min longitude: 12.6 – max longitude: 15.39 – min latitude: 35.51 – max Latitude: 38.18. Sampling design: The general strategy was to gather all the available published data on stygobitic crustacean fauna from Sicilian groundwater in a formal dataset covering different habitat types. Habitat type: cave, hyporheos, spring, catacomb, gallery, interstitial, well. Biogeographic region: Mediterranean (EEA, 2017).

Taxonomic Coverage
General description: the dataset covers organisms of the Phylum Arthropoda. Taxonomic ranks: Data from subspecies to species, subgenus, genus, family, order and class rank were included in the dataset. Taxonomic methods: Given the continuous changes in biological nomenclature, all scientific names published were checked and updated to the currently accepted nomenclature, following the most-updated literature. Taxon specialists: Fabio Stoch, Federico Marrone, Luca Vecchioni.,

Project Data
A review of bibliographical data on the Sicilian groundwater crustacean fauna was conducted based on an extensive literature search (scientific and grey literature). Additionally, the data stored in the CKmap and PASCALIS databases were revised and included in this study.

Study Area Description | Sicily, the largest Mediterranean island, spans an area of over 25,700 km2 and is known for its high level of biodiversity in the Mediterranean Basin. The hydrogeological setting of this biogeographic province is illustrated in Figure 1 by Pendino et al. (2024). The northern and northeastern parts of Sicily are occupied by mountain ranges such as Madonie, Nebrodi, and Peloritani, which are composed of various rock formations, including limestones, sandstones, and igneous and metamorphic rocks. In the southwest, the karstic Hyblean massif is home to perennial streams, a rich karstic aquifer, and numerous caves. The central part of the island is mainly composed of gypsum formations with poor and intermittent surface hydrography and well-developed caves. In the eastern part of Sicily, Mount Etna volcano, which stands 3,350 m above sea level, is the highest peak on the island. Moreover, Sicily is surrounded by smaller islands and archipelagos, which consist (from west to east) of the Aegadian Islands (carbonatic), the Island of Ustica (volcanic), and the Aeolian Islands (volcanic). Moreover, in the Sicilian channel, Pantelleria (volcanic) and the Pelagie Islands (Linosa, volcanic, and Lampedusa, carbonatic) are present. |

The personnel involved in the project:
Sampling Methods
We did not perform any additional sampling to collect records, but we used only published records in the scientific and grey literature
Study Extent | the dataset contains information on 87 occurrences for 35 taxa. The occurrences were recorded during the years 1977-2023. The study area is 25,832.39 km2. |
---|---|
Quality Control | Quality control for geographic data: Coordinates were verified on topographic maps. Coordinates (WGS84) Coordinate (WGS84) accuracy: exact (the coordinates were verified by the authors of present work and\or explicitly reported by the authors of the cited papers, precision 10 m); approximate (precision between 100 to 1000 m); toponym (when the exact sites could not be traced, the coordinates of the nearby toponym are given; precision > 1000) [but see also column “coordinateUncertainty” in the csv file]. Quality control for taxonomic data: All scientific names published were checked and updated to the currently accepted nomenclature, following the most-updated literature. For some taxa, we could not reach the species level. Therefore, based on the International Code of Zoological Nomenclature the following abbreviations were used: "sp", "sp.1", "sp.2" or "cf.". |
