Description

The collection includes organisms belonging to the Northern Adriatic epimegabenthic fauna. Epimegabenthos is conventionally defined as the zoobenthos living at the top of the substrate and larger than 1 cm. This compartment includes most macroinvertebrate phyla, such as Annelida, Arthropoda, Bryozoa, Cnidaria, Echinodermata, Mollusca, Porifera. Samples belong to coastal benthic habitats ranging in depth from intertidal to 30 m, either manually or by means of dredges or trawl nets. Samples are generally preserved in ethyl alcohol 70% or dry. Most samples have been collected along the Veneto coastline during 2016-2019 monitoring activities in the framework of the Marine Strategy Directive 2008/56/EC.

Data Records

The data in this occurrence resource has been published as a Darwin Core Archive (DwC-A), which is a standardized format for sharing biodiversity data as a set of one or more data tables. The core data table contains 246 records.

This IPT archives the data and thus serves as the data repository. The data and resource metadata are available for download in the downloads section. The versions table lists other versions of the resource that have been made publicly available and allows tracking changes made to the resource over time.

Title Marine Strategy Directive 2008/56/EC
Funding Most samples have been collected during 2016-2019 monitoring activities in the framework of the Marine Strategy Directive 2008/56/EC (Convenzione tra ARPAV e CNR-ISMAR per la collaborazione tecnico-scientifica nell’ambito della Direttiva 2008/56/CE sulla Strategia Marina – D.lgs. 190/2010. Attività di monitoraggio in ambito costiero Regione Veneto. P.O.A. 2015, 2016, 2017, 2018, 2019). Curatorship, cataloging and digitization were carried out in the context of the ITINERIS (Italian Integrated Environmental Research Infrastructures System) project funded by EU - Next Generation EU Mission 4 “Education and Research” - Component 2: “From research to business” - Investment 3.1: “Fund for the realization of an integrated system of research and innovation infrastructures” - Activity WP6.6 “National network of the aquatic science collections”.

Sampling Methods

Most samples have been collected during monitoring activities in the framework of the Marine Strategy Directive 2008/56/EC. Samplings were carried on a fishing vessel, by means of “rapido” trawling. For each of three sites per monitoring area, three linear transects, about 1 nautical mile long and 250 m apart, were performed. A quantitative sub-sample of the collected material, mostly by-catch, was collected for analysis, maintained at low temperatures, sorted and stored within 48 hours. All the organisms were quantified and determined to the lowest achievable taxonomic rank, based on up-to-date taxonomic keys and scientific literature.

Study Extent Most samples have been collected during monitoring activities in the framework of the Marine Strategy Directive 2008/56/EC. Annual monitoring campaign were performed in the period 2016-2019 over four 25 km2 areas characterized by muddy sand bottom, located between 3 and 6 nautical miles from the Veneto coastline, on bathymetries between 15 and 20 m.

Method step description:

  1. Most samples have been collected during monitoring activities in the framework of the Marine Strategy Directive 2008/56/EC. For details on the methods, see MATTM-ISPRA (2016) protocols (MATTM-ISPRA, Programmi di Monitoraggio per la Strategia Marina Art. 11, D.lgs. 190/2010 - Schede Metodologiche.
