Registros

In Piedmont, very few information is available on the distribution of F. limosus while Procambarus clarkii was deeply studied (Piscia et al. 2010; Boggero et al. 2023). The project aims at providing a first picture on the expansion of F. limosus in the Italian North-western lakes including Lake Orta by providing up-to date and georeferenced information.
Título | Monitoring of invasive crayfish species along the shores of Lake Orta |

Fuentes de Financiación | The activities were funded by the Project CUSIO 2030, CUP B53C23000930007, by Piedmont Region within the call for Requalification interventions of Piedmontese water bodies - Notice 2020 approved with D.G.R.N.18-2319 of 20/11/2020 within the project “Conservation and requalification measures of common reed (Phragmites australis) habitats of Lake Orta” (Cooperation agreement 08/06/2023), and by Rubinetteria VA Albertoni srl (Gozzano, Lake Orta) (Cooperation agreement 11/02/2021) within the project “Monitoring of invasive crayfish species along the shores of Lake Orta”. Additional thanks are due to the support of the project National Biodiversity Future Center funded under the National Recovery and Resilience Plan (NRRP), Mission 4 Component 2 Investment 1.4 - Call for tender No. 3138, 16/12/2021, rectified by Decree No. 3175, 18/12/2021 of the Italian Ministry of University and Research funded by the European Union – NextGenerationEU (Project code CN_00000033, Concession Decree No.1034, 17/06/2022). |
Descripción del área de estudio | The lake has a fluvio-glacial origin. Its coasts are characterised by steep slopes and by gentler areas where tourism and recreational activities have flourished. Fifteen survey sites were surveyed for environmental characteristics, but only 6 of them were selected for monitoring invasive crayfish. |
Descripción del diseño | An extensive monthly survey on lake Orta shores (2021–2022) to monitor the occurrence and population distribution of non-native crayfish was carried out. From a total of 15 sites characterised for environmental features, 6 were selected for crayfish monthly monitoring. Sampling method: trapping (modified from Garzoli et al. 2020) which involves the use of 13 cylindrical bite traps/site (30 × 60 cm) leaved on site for 12 h (Boggero et al. 2023). |

Métodos de muestreo
Twenty grams of cat food per trap were used to attract crayfish. The baited traps were placed at each sampling site at night when crayfish are more active, at a distance of about 2–3 m between them and retrieved in the following morning (soak time of approximately 12 h). On retrieval, the number of crayfish caught in each trap was recorded and by-catch of incidental non-target native species released (Boggero et al. 2023).
Área de Estudio | Lake Orta is a well-studied example of how a strong water acidification due to copper and ammonium sulphate discharges could collapse a whole biocoenosis in a lake (Bonacina 2001). Following its chemical recovery, accelerated by a liming intervention (Calderoni et al. 1991) carried out by the Italian Institute of Hydrobiology in Pallanza (currently Water Research Institute, CNR-IRSA), the lake has gradually been repopulated, with the reappearance of new species. |

Control de Calidad | Quality control for geographic data: Reliability of coordinates was checked in Google maps. Quality control for taxonomic data: Specimens were assigned to taxonomic units according to the available literature and identification keys by the creators of the dataset (taxonomic experts in the field). |
Descripción de la metodología paso a paso:
- The analyses of 99 occurrence record data (CPUE, morphological traits, sex ratio) are discussed in details in Boggero et al. (2023).
