Description
Data Records
The data in this occurrence resource has been published as a Darwin Core Archive (DwC-A), which is a standardized format for sharing biodiversity data as a set of one or more data tables. The core data table contains 58 records.
This IPT archives the data and thus serves as the data repository. The data and resource metadata are available for download in the downloads section. The versions table lists other versions of the resource that have been made publicly available and allows tracking changes made to the resource over time.
Versions
The table below shows only published versions of the resource that are publicly accessible.

Geographic Coverage
Sampling was carried out in freshwater environments distributed throughout Italy and other European countries.
Bounding Coordinates | South West [39.295, -4.019], North East [48.268, 16.263] |
---|
Taxonomic Coverage
The dataset includes occurrences of the order Ephemeroptera as part of the class Insecta, phylum Arthropoda. The rows of the list are divided into five families of mayflies, with 10 genera and 29 species.
Phylum | Arthropoda |

Class | Insecta |
Order | Ephemeroptera |
Temporal Coverage
Formation Period | 1989-present |

Sampling Methods
Samples were collected by qualitative sampling using a hand net.
Study Extent | This dataset represents the collection of the Ephemeroptera (microscope slides, drawings and specimens) held at CNR-IRSA in Brugherio, Italy. The study refers to specimens collected mainly in Italian freshwaters and sometimes in other European countries. |
---|---|
Quality Control | Quality control for taxonomic data: The revision of the species nomenclature was done by recognised experts in the taxonomy of Ephemeroptera. Quality control for geographic data: Reliability of coordinates where available was checked in QGIS. Geographic coordinate format, coordinates within country/provincial boundaries, and the absence of anomalous ASCII characters in the dataset were also double checked. |
Method step description:
- Each row in the dataset corresponds to a slide containing dissected body parts. There are currently 58 slides in this dataset. Drawings, preserved specimens and photographs of living specimens may be added to the collection in the future. catalogNumber: The code is made up of the collection code (EpheAB), two letters (MS for Microscope Slides or DR for Drawing or SP for Specimen), a letter representing a particular Ephemeroptera family (e.g. C for Caenidae, B for Baetidae, etc.) and a progressive number made up of four digits. materialSample: If an individual corresponds to only one object, the inscription is ‘1 of 1’, if an individual corresponds to two or more objects, the inscription is ‘1 of 2’ and ‘2 of 2’ and so on. eventType: each caption refers to a type of sampling event. Specifically, ‘Biodiversity assessment’ means that sampling occurred in free, unstructured assessment contexts; ‘Project’ means that sampling occurred in a particular funded project; ‘Survey’ means that sampling occurred in a monitoring campaign.
