Description
Data Records
The data in this occurrence resource has been published as a Darwin Core Archive (DwC-A), which is a standardized format for sharing biodiversity data as a set of one or more data tables. The core data table contains 597 records.
This IPT archives the data and thus serves as the data repository. The data and resource metadata are available for download in the downloads section. The versions table lists other versions of the resource that have been made publicly available and allows tracking changes made to the resource over time.
Versions
The table below shows only published versions of the resource that are publicly accessible.

Title | The study of biodiversity for a balance between conservation and exploitation in the Venice Lagoon" funded by CO.RI.LA (Consortium for coordination of research activities concerning the Venice lagoon system) |

Funding | Benthic invertebrates were collected during a project titled “The study of biodiversity for a balance between conservation and exploitation in the Venice Lagoon" funded by CO.RI.LA (Consortium for coordination of research activities concerning the Venice lagoon system). Curatorship, cataloging and digitization were carried out in the context of the ITINERIS (Italian Integrated Environmental Research Infrastructures System) project funded by EU - Next Generation EU Mission 4 “Education and Research” - Component 2: “From research to business” - Investment 3.1: “Fund for the realization of an integrated system of research and innovation infrastructures” - Activity WP6.6 “National network of the aquatic science collections”. |

Sampling Methods
Quantitative samples were taken at an average depth of 0.5 m. At each station five samples of sediment were collected with an Ekman box corer (volume=13 cm3). The sampling methodology involved two actions in order to verify the population distributional pattern: 1) The samples were randomly taken around the boat; 2) the block of sediment provided by the tool was cutted in two pieces: the surface layer of 5 cm and the underlying layer of 12 cm. The material was washed through a 1.0 mm mesh screen, organisms retained were placed in plastic jars where a sufficient amount of 1% chloral hydrate solution in sea water was added; this passage allows organisms to slowly move on to the dormant state with the relaxed body, crucial aspect for body parts useful for the determination. After 30 minutes the organisms were fixed in 4% buffered formalin. In the laboratory the specimens were sorted, identified to the lowest possible taxonomic level and enumerated. The specimens of each species were preserved in vials or jars with 70% ethanol.
Study Extent | The metadata considered here come from samplings carried out in nine stations located in the mud flats around the Canale di Burano from the Lido inlet to Dese river outflow in the lagoon of Venice. At each station geographical position was recorded by GPS. The samplings were carried out during May, August and October 2002 and March 2003. |

Method step description:
- After samplings the specimens were sorted, identified to the lowest possible taxonomic level and enumerated. The specimens of each species were preserved in vials or jars with 70% ethanol. For the collection set up: assessment of the conservation status, topping up or replacement of the preservatives, checking and/or replacing labels, nomenclature updated based on the World Register of Marine Species (WoRMS Editorial Board 2023), identification of taxa not yet determined. The dataset was structured based on the Darwin Core standard (DwC, Wieczorek et al., 2012). Each row contains a record of the occurrence of a taxon from a sample. Each row contains the presence of a species in a given replicate number, site and date and physically represents the digitized object. The dataset was set up according to 3 macro-fields: Codes and Additional Information, Taxonomy and Systematics, Geolocation.
