Datos del proyecto

This project aims to compile and analyze several large existing datasets of Belize and to disseminate the results to decision-makers and the public. The UB ERI will coordinate the mobilization of Belize's existing un-compiled bird data through eBird and the GBIF network. This will be done in collaboration with two main partners: the Forest Department (FD), the regulatory agency responsible for enforcing policies and regulations for sustainable management of its natural resources and Belize Audubon Society (BAS), a non-governmental organization that co-manages seven protected areas in Belize.

Título Improving Natural Resources Management in Belize through Mobilization of Biodiversity Data
Identificador BID-CA2016-0011-NAC
Fuentes de Financiación This project was made possible through the GBIF BID programme.
Descripción del área de estudio Data for this project was collected at several locations in Belize including protected areas and private lands. For this particular dataset, data was collected at the Payne's Creek National Park which is a protected area located in the southern part of Belize and is co-managed by Toledo Institute for Development and Environment.
Descripción del diseño Partners/stakeholders were contacted to assist in contributing digitized and un-digitized bird data toward this project. Data Sharing Agreements were signed between the UB ERI and partners before data was utilized and submitted.

Métodos de muestreo

The data collected used the point count method. Point counts were conducted at 200 m intervals along a 1 km transect. At each interval/point count, the recorder and observer recorded all bird species that were seen and/or heard within a 10 minute time frame. The number of individuals of that species was also recorded along with other data such as weather conditions, start time, end time and the date.

Área de Estudio Data was collected at Payne's Creek National Park in Belize from November 2008 to April 2013.
Control de Calidad The surveys were conducted by field staff who possess experience in identifying birds in the field. Identification guides were also used as references to properly identify the birds seen.

Descripción de la metodología paso a paso:

  1. The dataset was collected using the most commonly used point count methodology.

Metadatos adicionales

Propósito This dataset was developed based on point count data collected by the Toledo Institute for Development and Environment. The dataset includes observational data of both resident and migrant species. Having data on birds in Belize will allow information to be generated on abundance, diversity, etc.
Descripción de mantenimiento The maintenance frequency is not planned.
