Descrição
The Para River – Topibo Swamp studies 1993-2007 were focused on the ecology of this black water stream and the caiman species that were observed. During the study, fishes, amphibians and reptiles were collected. The dataset contains only the amphibians and reptiles. The study was carried out by Paul Ouboter, Bart De Dijn and Jan Toto.
This IPT archives the data and thus serves as the data repository. The data and resource metadata are available for download in the downloads section. The versions table lists other versions of the resource that have been made publicly available and allows tracking changes made to the resource over time.

Dados Sobre o Projeto
The project was executed between 1986-1996 as a PhD thesis of Paul Ouboter. The project was carried out in different study areas in Suriname and was focused on the occurrence, habitat and food of the three species of caiman that occurs in Suriname. The field work was organized by the national Zoological Collection of Suriname. During field trips for this research project other taxonomic groups were also collected.

Descrição da Área de Estudo | The Para River is a black water river draining part of the Savanna Belt. The river has floating meadows along its shore that sometimes extent to the middle and cover large area of the river. The Topibo Swamp is a natural swamp that was polluted by, among other chemicals, caustic soda from the bauxite refinery at Paranam. It was studied to assess the impact of spills on the biodiversity. |
Descrição do Design | Areas were visited to carry out night surveys on rivers to investigate caiman ecology, while during the day time the terrestrial and aquatic habitats were sampled for other taxonomic groups. |

Métodos de Amostragem
The sampling methods were specific to the taxonomic groups and included observations from a boat (including) hand sampling of amphibians and reptiles, seining and active collecting using Dip nets.
Área de Estudo | The Para River and the Topibo Swamp were surveyed on several occasions. |
---|---|
Controle de Qualidade | In some cases the identification of specimens was rechecked by foreign experts. |
Descrição dos passos do método:
- 1. The amphibians and reptiles were collected from a boat along the river and swamp during night surveys. Insects were collected using Dip-nets (active sampling). Fishes were collected using gill nets and seining. 2. The specimens were labeled in the field and after identification a collection number was assigned to each specimen. 3. The specimens were first preserved in formaldehyde and then transferred into 70% Ethanol. 4. All specimens were identified to species using literature and keys.
