Descrição

The dataset that is documented in this resource includes plant species found within vulnerable and impacted mangrove forest areas within selected parishes across Jamaica. Specific mangrove forest study areas were selected from Kingston,Portland, St. Ann, Trelawny, St. James and St. Elizabeth between 2011 and 2014.The project was designed to address the problem of the lack of baseline information and capacity for gathering such information on Jamaican mangroves forests, especially those associated with key conservation areas, like fish sanctuaries and vulnerable coastal areas.

Dados Sobre o Projeto

The project was designed to address the problem of the lack of baseline information and capacity for gathering such information on Jamaican mangroves forests, especially those associated with key conservation areas, like fish sanctuaries and vulnerable coastal areas.

Título UWI/EFJ- Baseline Surveys of vulnerable and impacted mangrove forest areas around Jamaica 2011 – 2014
Identificador BID-CA2016-0004-SMA Capacity Building for Biodiversity Data Sharing Through the Caribbean Coastal Data Centre, Jamaica
Financiamento Funding was made possible through an Environmental Foundation of Jamaica (EFJ) project-94101987 and The University of the West Indies. The EU through GBIF/BID project (BID-CA2016-0004-SMA) provided funding for digitization and publishing of data.
Descrição da Área de Estudo The project is located in vulnerable and impacted mangrove forest areas within selected parishes (Kingston, Portland, St. Ann, Trelawny, St. James & St. Elizabeth) across Jamaica.
Descrição do Design A desktop survey was first undertaken to determine the quality/quantity of any existing information on the coastal forests. This was followed by scoping exercises to determine the aerial extent and other features such as presence of freshwater (river/pond), as this would direct the approach and methodologies to be used in surveying the areas.

Métodos de Amostragem

Random belt transects (5 m wide and varying lengths depending on the forest) were demarked and 5 x 5 m ‘plots’ used as the sampling area from which vegetation characteristics were documented along the ‘belt’. In situ investigations of the forest area and contiguous near-shore waters were then conducted. A global positioning systems (GPS) was used for marking and recording the extent of the transects used in each forest. Forest survey data collection included tree types (and numbers), tree height as well as diameter at breast height (DBH) were noted.

Área de Estudo Forest survey data of mangrove species were collected in Jamaica from Port Royal Kingston; Manchioneal, Salt Creek, Errol Flynn Marina, Drapers & Dolphin Bay, Portland; Seville, Kaiser Lake and Pear Tree Bottom, St. Ann; West Falmouth, Trelawny; Bogue, St. James as well as Malcolm Bay, St. Elizabeth.

Descrição dos passos do método:

  1. Mangrove forest areas are identified using satellite technology.
  2. 5x5m wide belt transect are used to sample the forest.
  3. Vegetation characteristics such as tree type and numbers, height as well as diameter at breast height are noted.
