Descrição
Bird banding data collected at a private reserve, Shipstern Conservation and Management Area (SCMA), in Belize that is managed by the Corozal Sustainable Future Initiative. The data was collected using the Monitoreo de Sobrevivencia Invernal (MoSI-Monitoring Overwintering Survival) protocol developed by the Institute for Bird Populations (IBP). The dataset includes data collected in November 2017 and January 2018.
This IPT archives the data and thus serves as the data repository. The data and resource metadata are available for download in the downloads section. The versions table lists other versions of the resource that have been made publicly available and allows tracking changes made to the resource over time.

Dados Sobre o Projeto
This project aims to compile and analyze several large existing bird datasets of Belize. The University of Belize Environmental Research Institute will coordinate the mobilization of Belize's existing un-compiled bird data through eBird and the GBIF network. This will be done in collaboration with two main partners: the Forest Department, the regulatory agency responsible for enforcing relevant policies and regulations for the sustainable management of Belize's natural resources and the Belize Audubon Society (BAS), a non-governmental Organization who co-manages seven protected areas in Belize.

Descrição da Área de Estudo | Data for this project was collected at several locations in Belize, including protected areas and privately owned area. For this particular dataset, data was collected at Shipstern Conservation & Management Area which is a private reserve located in north-eastern Belize. The data was collected by UB ERI and CSFI. |
Descrição do Design | Partners/stakeholders were contacted to assist in contributing digitized and un-digitized data towards this project. Data Sharing Agreements were signed between the UB ERI and partners before data was utilized and submitted. |

Métodos de Amostragem
The data was collected following the MoSI protocol in which 16 mist-nets are set up at a station covering approximately 9 hectares. The station is operated for three days per month from November to March. Mist-nets are opened at sunrise and checked every half hour for a total of six hours per day. Birds caught are safely extracted and taken back to a processing station where they are identified to the species level and data is collected on fat, age, sex, weight etc. All resident and migrant songbirds captured in the nets are banded except for hummingbirds.
Área de Estudo | Data was collected at Shipstern Conservation & Management Area on November 2017 and January 2018. |
---|---|
Controle de Qualidade | The station is operated by experienced and certified bird banders and assistants. Ageing and sexing resources and materials are used to properly age and sex birds and photos are taken for references. |
Descrição dos passos do método:
- This data set was collected using the MoSI protocol.
Metadados Adicionais
Propósito | This dataset was developed based on MoSI banding data collected at Shipstern Conservation Management Area as part of long term monitoring in Belize. The dataset includes data on both residents of Belize and migrants. Having data on birds in Belize will allow information to be generated on abundance, distribution, diversity etc. |

Descrição da manutenção | The maintenance frequency is not planned. |
