説明

As part of an ESIA for bauxite mining for BHP Billiton, baseline studies were carried out for several key taxonomic groups. The study on amphibians and reptiles was carried out by a team consisting of Paul Ouboter, Rawien Jairam, Gwendolyn Landburg and Gaitrie Satnarain, whom visited the area in November 2005, January and May 2006 and June 2008.

Study Area Description Mostly xerophytic rainforest on bauxiet plateau's and mesophytic rainforest in river valleys. Streams are clear with many rapids. Transects were 1000m long and cross the gradient from the plateau to the creek valley.

収集方法

The sampling methods were specific for amphibians and reptiles, which included transect walks, hand sampling and seining.

Study Extent Bakhuis Mountains were sampled five times.
Quality Control The data was identified with the use of field guides and or amphibian call libraries.

Method step description:

  1. 1. The amphibians were collected using line transects during night and day surveys. Reptiles were collected by hand when encountered. 2. The specimens were labeled in the field and after identification a collection number was assigned to each specimen. 3. The specimens were first preserved in formaldehyde and then transferred into 70% Ethanol. 4. All specimens were identified to species using literature and keys.
