Description
The dataset contains primary biodiversity data of native amphibian, reptile, bird and mammal species recorded in Uruguay by members of Biodiversidata between 2000 and 2019. It includes observations made during surveys of specific faunistic groups and occasional sampling events. The presence of individuals was recorded either by direct observations or by preserved specimens deposited in collections.

Biodiversidata’s data paper (https://doi.org/10.3897/BDJ.7.e36226) was generated with the aim to contribute to the knowledge of the biodiversity of Uruguay by developing the first open-access biodiversity resource for the country. Data was collated from a range of different sources, such as records provided from the members of the organization, data available on online databases and data currently published but not available in digital and standardised format (i.e.: data from field guides and books, and primary literature such as monographs, systematic accounts, species descriptions, reviews and reports of range extensions). The data presented in the current dataset correspond only to the records provided by the members of Biodiversidata.

Description du domaine d'étude / de recherche | All the Uruguayan territory |
Description du design | The data were provided by 14 members of Biodiversidata working in the vertebrates group. The dataset contains records made during surveys of specific faunistic groups and occasional sampling events. They consist mostly in human observations which, in some cases, had specimens preserved. In each case, the method and objective of the observation varied and ranged from targeted sampling to non-systematic collection. |

Méthodes d'échantillonnage
The dataset contains records made during surveys of specific faunistic groups and occasional sampling events.
Etendue de l'étude | The data were collected in more than 120 localities of Uruguay. |
---|---|
Contrôle qualité | Species were identified by the expert members of Biodiversidata who provided de data. Species names were standardised, and georeferenced point data were checked at state level. |
Description des étapes de la méthode:
- The dataset was prepared to improve the findability, accessibility, interoperability and reuse of the data collated. We enriched the records incorporating more than 30 descriptive terms following the Darwin Core Biodiversity Data Standard (https://dwc.tdwg.org/). The R scripts used to clean the data can be found at: https://github.com/bienflorencia/rBiodiversidata
- For standardisation of species names and complete taxonomic categories retrieval given the species names, we used the R package 'taxize' (https://github.com/ropensci/taxize). We followed Integrated Taxonomic Information System database (itis.gov) as reference.
- To complete the conservation status of species according to the IUCN Red List assessment, we used the R package 'rredlist' (https://github.com/ropensci/rredlist).
- Georeferenced point data resulted from either GPS measurements or by defining the latitude and longitude of the event locality through the GeoNames Gazetteer database (geonames.org). Coordinates are presented in decimal degrees and checked at state level.
