Описание

The dataset contains primary biodiversity data of the mammals’ species documented by the NGO JULANA in the area of Paso Centurión, one of the most biodiverse areas of Uruguay. It includes 1,690 occurrence records, all the observations made by camera traps between 2014 and 2016 in four particular sites and some extra occurrence records of species not covered in that period. Top observations include the last Chrysocyon brachyurus seen for Uruguay, the first record of Puma yagouaroundi for the country and the second report of Leopardus colocola munoai for the area.

Данные проекта

Since 2012, a participatory monitoring process has been established in this locality by the NGO JULANA (Bergós et al. 2018). The emphasis of the activities has been put in documenting the biodiversity knowledge of Paso Centurión, along with the local community’s relationships with nature, using camera traps as recording methods and the local mammal fauna as the focal point of the dialogue.

Методы сбора

The records are machine observations obtained using camera traps.

Охват исследования The area of Paso Centurión is located in the department of Cerro Largo, on the border with Brazil by the Yaguarón River. The trap cameras were set covering an area of 25 km2 within the surroundings of Paso Centurión.
Контроль качества Species names were checked using the GBIF backbone taxonomy.

Описание этапа методики:

  1. Trap cameras (Bushnell NatureView Cam HD) were set covering an area of 25 km2 within the surroundings of Paso Centurión. The management of the cameras and records was carried out by JULANA members, the landowners where the cameras were set, and other people from the local community involved in the monitoring process. Cameras were placed on native forest patches associated with freshwater streams nearby the houses of the landowners (between 200- and 2,000-meters distance). Different parameter settings were used for the cameras, some were set to take photos, others to record 10-seconds videos and in other cases, 3 photos were obtained together with a 10-seconds video after a 5-seconds interval. We allowed parameters to vary greatly because the main aim was placed in exploring the tool and detecting as many species as possible.
  2. Data from the cameras were downloaded with a periodicity of one to four months.
  3. The species identification and event data documentation were carried out by Enzo Cavalli, Diego Flores and Marcela Rondoni, as part of their undergraduate thesis work (Cavalli 2019; Rondoni 2019; Flores in prep). The reference used for mammal species identification was the guide from the mammals of Uruguay from González and Martínez-Lanfranco (2010). Only mammal species were considered. When the files corresponded to 3 consecutive photos (one per second) of the same species, a single record was considered. Similarly, three photos per second were followed by a video were counted as a single record. When the animal was recorded in 3 photos, we recorded the observation in which the species was identify with greater precision.
  4. Domestic species and human records were excluded at this point, including records from Bos taurus, Sus scrofa domestica, Ovis aries, Canis lupus familiaris, Equus caballus and Felis catus.
  5. The table with all the records was standardised following FAIR Principles (Wilkinson et al. 2016) to enable the maximum re-use of the data. We enriched the records by including 40 descriptive terms following the Darwin Core Biodiversity Data Standard (Wieczorek et al. 2012).
  6. Species scientific names and scientific names authorship were extracted using the R package taxize (Chamberlain et al. 2018). The R scripts can be found at Grattarola (2019).
  7. Extra records of species documented in the area outside of the period of time above mentioned were added, including records from Axis axis, Chrysocyon brachyurus, Puma yagouaroundi y Coendu spinosus.
