Descrição

Bon Accord Lagoon is a mangrove-fringed lagoon with a seagrass community, found landward of the Buccoo Reef. Buccoo Reef is a major tourist attraction with great economic and cultural significance. Previous studies conducted in this area have focused on the reef, and while the scientific literature suggests that reef ecological processes may be influenced by adjacent wetlands, an ecological characterization of the lagoon has not been undertaken. This study characterizes the ecosystems within the Bon Accord Lagoon and the hydrological and hydrodynamic processes that influence them.

This IPT archives the data and thus serves as the data repository. The data and resource metadata are available for download in the downloads section. The versions table lists other versions of the resource that have been made publicly available and allows tracking changes made to the resource over time.

Descrição da Área de Estudo Buccoo Reef and Bon Accord Lagoon, located on the leeward coast of Tobago, are the best examples of contiguous coral reefs, seagrass beds, and mangrove swamps in Trinidad and Tobago. Buccoo Reef is of great cultural and economic significance to the people of Tobago and to the country as a whole. The Bon Accord Lagoon/Buccoo Reef ecosystem is located at 11' 10' N, 60' 57' W, on the southwest coast of Tobago, which is located 32 km northeast of Trinidad, in the southeast Caribbean (Figure 1.3). This ecosystem covers an area of 7 km2, and is characterized by five emergent carbonate platforms to the north, a shallow sandy lagoon with a patchy distribution of coral communities, and the mangrove-fringed Bon Accord Lagoon with a seagrass community.
Descrição do Design The overall goal is to understand the ecology of the Bon Accord Lagoon and determine the extent of impacts from anthropogenic activities.

Métodos de Amostragem

Quadrats plots were used in the mangrove area, gill and trammel nets were used around the mangrove, beam trawls were used over the seagrass beds, and aerial photography was also used in the surveys.
