Description
This dataset contains digitized records from the historical Herbarium of Biagio Bartalini, preserved at the Museo di Storia Naturale Accademia dei Fisiocritici (MFS) in Siena. The Herbarium documents the flora of the Siena province and nearby areas during the 18th century, offering a valuable botanical and historical perspective.
Original determinations by Bartalini are reported in the field verbatimIdentification. The currently accepted scientific names, based on modern taxonomic revision, are provided in the scientificName field. Geographical coordinates were not included in the GBIF dataset due to the high level of uncertainty regarding historical localities. Where possible, descriptive locality names were retained (locality field). The temporal coverage reflects the lifespan of Bartalini (1750–1822), although the specimens were most likely collected up until the end of the 18th century. Digital images of the Herbarium specimens are linked via the associatedMedia field.
Data Records
The data in this occurrence resource has been published as a Darwin Core Archive (DwC-A), which is a standardized format for sharing biodiversity data as a set of one or more data tables. The core data table contains 675 records.
This IPT archives the data and thus serves as the data repository. The data and resource metadata are available for download in the downloads section. The versions table lists other versions of the resource that have been made publicly available and allows tracking changes made to the resource over time.
Versions
The table below shows only published versions of the resource that are publicly accessible.

The personnel involved in the project:
Sampling Methods
The Herbarium specimens were collected during the 18th century by Biagio Bartalini. No standardized sampling methodology was applied, as the specimens were gathered before the development of modern botanical survey protocols. The collection reflects opportunistic sampling and botanical exploration practices of the time.
Study Extent | The study covers the flora of Siena and surrounding areas in Tuscany (Central Italy), based on Herbarium specimens collected during the 18th century by Biagio Bartalini. The geographic extent includes sites within the historical boundaries of the Grand Duchy of Tuscany, although exact collection sites are often uncertain due to the historical nature of the records. |

Method step description:
-
Herbarium specimens were reviewed and original labels were transcribed. Where necessary, taxonomic names were updated according to current nomenclatural standards. Each specimen was digitized using high-resolution imaging. Metadata were compiled following the Darwin Core standard, and the dataset was published through the GBIF IPT (Integrated Publishing Toolkit).
