2020-05-29 eng Type specimens are extremely crucial for taxonomic studies as they form the backbone for species nomenclature. BNHS houses a good collection of type specimens, especially for reptiles and amphibians which is growing frequently. The current dataset consists of 267 occurrence records for type specimens of various reptiles including 175 lizards and 92 snakes collected from India and nearby countries. Verbatim location information and decimal coordinates are also provided for almost the entire dataset. Addressing the taxonomic and geographical shortfall for amphibians and reptiles using specimen data from the collection of Bombay Natural History Society, Mumbai, India, Bombay Natural History Society, India Saunak Pal 0000-0002-8267-4708 metadataProvider Rahul Khot curator Occurrence data is an invaluable resource to understand species distributions across space and time. A Museum collections provide much-needed information on morphology, historical occurrence, and distribution in the form of specimens and associated metadata. Unfortunately, this information is often not utilized to its full potential as it is not readily available. With more than 135,000 faunal specimens collected from across the Indian Subcontinent over a period of 135 years, the Bombay Natural History Society (BNHS) is one of the finest natural history collections in Asia. This project aims to address a data gap of Indian reptiles and amphibians by digitizing BNHS specimens and associated metadata to make it readily available for conservation assessments, policymakers, and stakeholders. BIFA collection of BNHS museum, India Digitization of the reptile and amphibian specimens from the museum collection by correcting taxonomic ambiguities and accurate cataloging of the extant specimens.
