Description
This dataset includes all animal species introduced in Suriname but originating from other countries. It includes all species that have viable populations in natural ecosystems and presents details on invasiveness. Invasiveness is categorized as competing with or praying on autochthonous fauna, causing harm to ecosystems, having an economic impact, being vectors of diseases or being a nuisance to humans, cattle or pets. Also, alien pets causing damage to local fauna are included. Excluded are cattle and pets not having viable populations in natural ecosystems and not causing any known damage to local fauna.
Data Records
The data in this checklist resource has been published as a Darwin Core Archive (DwC-A), which is a standardized format for sharing biodiversity data as a set of one or more data tables. The core data table contains 50 records.
This IPT archives the data and thus serves as the data repository. The data and resource metadata are available for download in the downloads section. The versions table lists other versions of the resource that have been made publicly available and allows tracking changes made to the resource over time.
Versions
The table below shows only published versions of the resource that are publicly accessible.

Project Data
The purpose of this project is to make the various collections at the main institutions housing the biodiversity information available digitally through publication and the possible creation of a CariBIF portal for the region (Atlas of Living Caribbean). The Introduced Fauna Suriname Checklist was especially created to supply data for the Atlas of Living Caribbean.
Title | Improving Biodiversity data accessibility in the Caribbean countries of Trinidad & Tobago, Barbados and Suriname |
---|---|
Identifier | BID-CA2016-0006-REG |
Funding | This project is made possible through a BID project by GBIF, financed by the European Union. |
Study Area Description | This project covers Introduced fauna in Suriname observed, collected or mentioned in literature from approximately 1960 till present. |
Design Description | The goal of this project is to make taxonomic records of the NZCS and biogeographic and ecological research executed in Suriname accessible to all. |

Sampling Methods
This data was predominantly collected during expeditions, monitoring surveys, other research activities or through accidental observations by scientists or reported by citizens. In few cases (dog and cats) this information was know fact.
Study Extent | The data was collected from many areas in Suriname. |
---|---|
Quality Control | Especially in cases of reports by citizens, the identification of specimens was rechecked by (foreign) experts. |
Method step description:
- 1. Specimens that could not be identified to species were either sampled, photographed, recorded or retrieved from a publication. In some cases the observation/recorded information was shared by citizens and then identified by (foreign) scientists. 2. The data of the positively identified introduced species was then compiled into a checklist.
