Descrição
The Sipaliwini Savanna expedition in 1997 was carried out from 10-16 April and then a second expedition took place from 15-28 April 2014. The first team consisted of Paul Ouboter, Helen Hiwat-van Laar, Anielkoemar Gangadien and Shamita Sahdew. The amphibian and reptile team of 2014 consisted of Antoine Fouquet, Jean-Piere Vacher, Paul Ouboter and Vanessa Kadosoe. Jerome Murienne investigated harvestmen and Piero Delprete and Gunovaino Marjanom worked on plants. From the Sipaliwini Airstrip the team split up in three groups, one group (AP and J-PV) went to Apalagadi Mt., the other (PO, VK and JM) to the Sipaliwini Savanna, while the plant group (PD and GM) stayed at the airstrip. The amphibians and reptiles included in the dataset are from the savanna area and forest bordering the savanna in the North.
This IPT archives the data and thus serves as the data repository. The data and resource metadata are available for download in the downloads section. The versions table lists other versions of the resource that have been made publicly available and allows tracking changes made to the resource over time.

Descrição da Área de Estudo | Savanna on rolling hills while most of the valleys are grass swamps. The area north of the Sipaliwini Savanna consists of Mesophytic rainforest on slopes. This area is the southern part of the Eilerts de Haan Mountain with the highest peak within the area, being the Apalagadi Mountain. |
Descrição do Design | Areas were sampled for harvestmen, amphibians and reptiles during the day and in the evening while using line transects and random sampling. For plants mostly active sampling was used for collecting. |

Métodos de Amostragem
The sampling methods were specific to the taxonomic groups and included transect walks, random sampling, hand sampling and active insect collecting.
Área de Estudo | The Sipaliwini Savanna, Apalagadi and the Sipaliwini Airstrip were sampled twice. |
---|---|
Controle de Qualidade | The data was identified with the use of field guides and or amphibian call libraries. In some cases the identification of specimens was rechecked by foreign experts. |
Descrição dos passos do método:
- 1. The amphibians were collected using line transects and vocal recordings during night and day surveys. Reptiles were collected by hand when encountered. The harvestmen were collected by active sampling. Plants were collected by random sampling. 2. The specimens were labeled in the field and after identification a collection number was assigned to each specimen. 3. Tissue samples were collected for DNA analysis. 4. The specimens were first preserved in formaldehyde and then transferred into 70% Ethanol. 5. All specimens were identified to species using literature and keys.
