説明
This expedition took place in two parts. The Maratakka River was visited in July 1988 and July 1989, while the Nickerie River, Arawarra and Wayambo rivers were visited in October 1988. The Nickerie River was visited a second time in March 1989. The team consisted of Paul Ouboter, Jan Mol, Frank van der Lugt and Jan Toto. The group traveled from Wageningen upstream the Nickerie River till the Stondansi Rapid. After that they visited the Arawarra and Wayambo rivers. The main goal of the expedition was to study caiman ecology in the area. On the way a few amphibians and Arachnida were collected.

地理的範囲
The geographic coverage for the Maratakka-Nickerie River Expedition 1988 encompasses the middle Nickerie River and the Arawarra and the Wayambo River. The Arawarra and the Wayambo River form a bifurcation between Nickerie River and the Coppename River systems.

プロジェクトデータ
The project was executed between 1986-1996 as a PhD thesis of Paul Ouboter. The project was carried out in different study areas in Suriname and was focused on the occurrence, habitat and food of the three species of caiman that occurs in Suriname. The field work was organized by the National Zoological Collection of Suriname. During field trips for this research project other taxonomic groups were also collected.

Study Area Description | Mostly clear to blackwater rivers and creeks, with most upstream rapid. These rivers are usually surrounded by tropical rainforest and freshwater swaps. |
研究の意図、目的、背景など(デザイン) | Areas were visited to carry out night surveys on rivers to investigate caiman ecology, while during the day time the terrestrial and aquatic habitats were sampled for other taxonomic groups. |

収集方法
The sampling methods were specific to the taxonomic groups and included transect walks, hand sampling and using active insect collecting.
Study Extent | The Maratakka-Nickerie River area was sampled once. |
---|---|
Quality Control | In some cases the identification of specimens was rechecked by foreign experts. |
Method step description:
- 1. The amphibians were collected using line transects during night and day surveys. Spiders were collected through active sampling. 2. The specimens were labeled in the field and after identification a collection number was assigned to each specimen. 3. The specimens were first preserved in formaldehyde and then transferred into 70% Ethanol. The spiders were dried and pinned. 4. All specimens were identified to species using literature and keys.
