Descrição
Spiders are dominant and ubiquitous predators feeding on a range of prey including insects. They are found on all continents except Antarctica in almost all the ecosystems. Taxonomically, they are invertebrates classified in the phylum Arthropoda as they have segmented body and paired appendages with joints. There are over 50,000 spider species recorded and arachnologists estimate another fold of undiscovered species. In one of the most biodiverse tropical regions—India, about 1,800 species have been recorded and about 20 new species are being recorded annually. In the light of unprecedented global change, an expedited biodiversity documentation is warranted using initiative such as through public participation. SpiderIndia is the citizen science community of about 9,000 spider enthusiasts that document spiders across the Indian subcontinent. It helps to bridge the knowledge gap between researchers and the general public and to study spider diversity from the Indian subcontinent. SpiderIndia organizes meetings annually for interactions and documentation of spiders from different geographical parts of India. The present data set is a result from its 2021 annual meeting organized by SpiderIndia member Anubhav Agarwal at Auroville, Tamil Nadu, India. Over a period of three days, the participants recorded 41 genera classified into 21 families of spiders observed from different habitats.
This IPT archives the data and thus serves as the data repository. The data and resource metadata are available for download in the downloads section.
