說明
National Moth Week is a global citizen science project established in 2012 by Friends of the East Brunswick Environmental Commission in New Jersey. It encourages everyone to learn about, observe, and document moths in their backyards, parks, and neighborhoods. It is held every year during the last full week of July. Since its inception, events have been registered annually in a total of more than 80 countries. India is estimated to be home to more than 10,000 moth species (Sondhi and Kunte, 2014). However, moth taxonomy and distribution are relatively poorly studied compared to other ‘popular’ taxa, including their cousins, the butterflies, both globally and in India. Moth studies in India have mostly been centered around biodiversity hotspots. As such, there is a lack of information on moth diversity in urban and suburban areas. Taking the National Moth Week 2022 as an opportunity, Nature Mates organized a 3-day public mothing event at 3 different locations in the Kolkata Metropolitan Region, with the purposes of spreading awareness about moths, promoting citizen science as well as adding to the knowledge of moth diversity of Kolkata Metropolitan Region. Moth screens were set up at each of the 3 locations between 26-28th July 2022. The locations were chosen such that they span the length of the region and improve the geographical coverage of the study. The days were selected keeping in mind the lunar phase (New Moon), so as to increase the chances of attracting moths to the screen. Participants observed and photographed the moths encountered on the sheet and took notes. Photographs were uploaded to citizen science portals. The moths were identified and the number of individuals were counted and listed to create this dataset.

方法步驟描述:
- All the listed moths were observed, photographed and field notes were taken. Photographs were uploaded to a citizen science portal, iNaturalist, and the National Moth Week ‘project’ hosted therein (National Moth Week 2022: India · iNaturalist). Identification of the moths were done to the extent possible, on field and with the help of photos, citizen science forums and internet resources like the Moths of India website (http://www.mothsofindia.org/).
