Description

This dataset includes occurrence data of mammals on the Valparai Plateau and Anamalai Tiger Reserve, Tamil Nadu, India, collected between 2015 and 2018. Data were recorded on a mobile phone application as direct sightings or from indirect signs in the field. Photographs were taken whenever possible.

Data Records

The data in this occurrence resource has been published as a Darwin Core Archive (DwC-A), which is a standardized format for sharing biodiversity data as a set of one or more data tables. The core data table contains 3,742 records.

This IPT archives the data and thus serves as the data repository. The data and resource metadata are available for download in the downloads section. The versions table lists other versions of the resource that have been made publicly available and allows tracking changes made to the resource over time.

Project Data

Our research and restoration programme focuses on the region’s unique, biologically diverse tropical rainforests in the Western Ghats, with a specific focus on the Anamalai Hills.

Title Tropical Rainforest Research and Ecological Restoration in the Anamalai Hills, Western Ghats, India
Identifier ncf-arrp
Funding Various
Study Area Description The Anamalai Tiger Reserve (ATR), Tamil Nadu, India (core zone: 958 km², 10.2160N, 76.8160E – 10.5660N, 77.4160E) is a protected area in the Western Ghats. The adjoining Valparai Plateau (220 km², 10.250N, 76.8660E – 10.3660N, 76.9830E) in the Anamalai Hills is a landscape dominated by tea and coffee plantations with about 45 embedded rainforest fragments ranging in area from 1 ha to over 300 ha.
Design Description The occurrence data were gathered opportunistically by members of the research team (observers) using a form on a mobile phone application during routine fieldwork and travel in the study area.

The personnel involved in the project:

Divya Mudappa

Sampling Methods

Opportunistic observations recorded on a form on the mobile phone application of mammals during regular field work and travel in the study area.

Study Extent Chiefly the Anamalai Tiger Reserve (ATR), Tamil Nadu, India (core zone: 958 km², 10.2160N, 76.8160E – 10.5660N, 77.4160E) and the adjoining Valparai Plateau (220 km², 10.250N, 76.8660E – 10.3660N, 76.9830E) in the Anamalai Hills.
Quality Control Field identification was based on direct sightings, photographs or signs, and dataset was reviewed by colleagues. Taxa that could not be identified to species were identified to Genus or Family.

Method step description:

  1. The raw and curated datasets, along with photographs, were first uploaded to Zenodo (https://doi.org/10.5281/zenodo.7008314). Using R code, the dataset was transformed into Darwin Core format for upload to GBIF. Individual counts were extracted from notes and manually entered in a separate column before upload.
  2. For version 1.1 image URLs (associatedMedia) and some locations and locality details corrected as described in version details.
