Description

This dataset presents a personal checklist of plant species observed within Jigme Singye Wangchuck National Park (JSWNP), the third largest national park in Bhutan, covering approximately 1,730 km². The data were collected between October 2015 and August 2019, during my tenure working in the park. JSWNP spans a wide elevational and ecological gradient, from subtropical broadleaf forests to alpine meadows, and harbors rich biodiversity, including many rare and endemic species. During this period, I documented various plant species through field observations and photography, primarily for personal reference and learning. This checklist reflects species encountered across different habitats within the park and is intended to contribute to the growing body of biodiversity knowledge for Bhutan. While not exhaustive or systematic, the dataset provides valuable records from under-documented areas and complements other floristic inventories in the region.

Data Records

The data in this checklist resource has been published as a Darwin Core Archive (DwC-A), which is a standardized format for sharing biodiversity data as a set of one or more data tables. The core data table contains 425 records.

1 extension data tables also exist. An extension record supplies extra information about a core record. The number of records in each extension data table is illustrated below.

Taxon (core)
425
Distribution
519

This IPT archives the data and thus serves as the data repository. The data and resource metadata are available for download in the downloads section. The versions table lists other versions of the resource that have been made publicly available and allows tracking changes made to the resource over time.

Sampling Methods

No sampling protocol as such was followed. Plants were recorded when encountered during field works.

Study Extent This study area covers the whole area of Jigme Singye Wangchuck National Park

Method step description:

  1. Plant species included in this dataset were observed during field visits across various parts of Jigme Singye Wangchuck National Park between October 2015 and August 2019. Photographs of the plants were taken in situ to aid in later verification. Species identification was carried out primarily using the Flora of Bhutan as the main taxonomic reference. When necessary, additional cross-referencing was done using field notes and other regional botanical resources. The resulting checklist reflects personal observations and is intended to complement more formal inventories and floristic studies.

Additional Metadata

Acknowledgements I would like to express my heartfelt gratitude to all the staff of Jigme Singye Wangchuck National Park (JSWNP) who worked alongside me from October 2015 to August 2019. Their support, collaboration, and deep knowledge of the park’s landscapes and biodiversity greatly enriched my experience and made this work possible. I am especially thankful to the Chief forestry officer,  field rangers, park officials, and administrative staff whose dedication to conservation and willingness to share insights and field experiences contributed immensely to the observations compiled in this checklist. This dataset is as much a reflection of their commitment as it is of my personal efforts.
Introduction Jigme Singye Wangchuck National Park (JSWNP) is one of Bhutan’s most ecologically diverse protected areas, spanning a wide range of altitudes and habitat types. From October 2015 to August 2019, I had the opportunity to work in the park, during which I recorded observations of plant species encountered across various field sites. This dataset is a compilation of those personal records, maintained as a checklist to document the plant diversity observed during that period. While not exhaustive, it offers valuable insights into the park’s flora and contributes to the broader understanding of biodiversity in this important conservation area.
Purpose The purpose of this dataset is to document and share a personal checklist of plant species observed within Jigme Singye Wangchuck National Park between October 2015 and August 2019. By making these records publicly available, the dataset aims to contribute to the floristic knowledge of the park, support future botanical research and conservation efforts, and complement existing biodiversity data for Bhutan.
