Description

This dataset contains mammal occurrence records (November 2023 - February 2026) from the Western Ghats, collected using a mobile collection application (EpiCollect5). A few reptiles are also added opportunistically. This includes data from three data sources:1. Western Ghats Mammals(https://five.epicollect.net/project/western-ghats-mammals (private project), 12th July 2024 - 28th February 2026, n=4139)2. Gaur Project (https://five.epicollect.net/project/gaur-project (public project), 4th Jan 2024 - 24th Apr 2024, n=88)3. Monika_Gaur_Survey(https://five.epicollect.net/project/monika-gaur-survey (public project), 28th Nov 2023 - 2nd Dec 2023, n=32)47 taxa are recorded in this dataset.

Data Records

The data in this occurrence resource has been published as a Darwin Core Archive (DwC-A), which is a standardized format for sharing biodiversity data as a set of one or more data tables. The core data table contains 4,139 records.

This IPT archives the data and thus serves as the data repository. The data and resource metadata are available for download in the downloads section. The versions table lists other versions of the resource that have been made publicly available and allows tracking changes made to the resource over time.

Versions

The table below shows only published versions of the resource that are publicly accessible.

Sampling Methods

Opportunistic observations of signs or sightings of mammals were recorded on the mobile application in an ad hoc manner. The sightings were often (but not always) along roads traversed by researchers for other activities. All records were recorded on a mobile application (EpiCollect5).

Study Extent Mammals were recorded across the Western Ghats but primarily within three clusters: (1) Anamalai Tiger Reserve and the adjoining Valparai Plateau in the Anamalai Hills, Tamil Nadu (2) Forests and plantations of Nilgiris Hills and adjoining forests in Tamil Nadu, Kerala and Karnataka (3) Forests in and around Sakleshpur district centred in the Kadamane Estate of Karnataka
Quality Control Data were checked for erroneous records, missing information, and location outliers.

Method step description:

  1. Common names of species were matched to scientific names on GBIF backbone.
