Freshwater species of the Seychelles - Version 1.26

<para>The Freshwater fauna of the Seychelles has been relatively well-documented with 69 described species and some yet to be described. The macro-invertebrate fauna of the Seychelles has been less well-studied with around 137 species of insects, 14-16 species of Decapods, and it is estimated that there are around 20-25 species of Odonata, some of which are unique to the islands. There are also 15 species of freshwater snails and bivalves on the islands of the Seychelles. Many of the species of invertebrates are also unique to the Seychelles and are under threat from habitat destruction and introduced exotic species.
The majority of the Seychelles' freshwater species are compiled in this collection from grey literature and the Seychelles' current species checklist. Its two primary goals are:
1.	To distribute a taxonomic index of all species found in the nation that has been agreed upon nationally.
2.	To link important information about these species' conservation relevance in the Seychelles to that checklist.
This dataset is limited to freshwater species in its initial edition, but it will eventually be expanded to include other taxonomic groups (Freshwater aquatic plants).
Furthermore, we use the release of this dataset as a chance to fortify collaborations in Seychelles, as the listed species and their taxonomic and conservation statuses require examination and discussion with the region's scientific community.
Gaea Seychelles and Dr. Bruno Senterre, a scientist, received the first pre-published edition. The primary author of this dataset is Gaea Seychelles, with Dr. Bruno Senterre contributing to its improvement and verification. As such, this dataset will function as an open-source repository for a formal Seychelles freshwater species evaluation.
We have examined the several standards that are available with GBIF through the primary 'cores' and extensions (http://rs.gbif.org/extension/gbif/1.0/) to compile this dataset. Lists of species were gathered and assembled from scholarly literature.
This version will be updated by:
1.	Adding vernacular/colloquial names
2.	Adding the status of every synonym
3.	Adding the invasiveness of species</para>

<para>This dataset contains bird occurrence records collected between 2015 and 2025 as part of Eni Ghana’s long term environmental monitoring programme in the Ellembelle District of Ghana’s Western Region. The monitoring activities spanned the baseline, construction, and operational phases of onshore project development, producing a decade long dataset documenting spatial and temporal patterns in avifaunal presence within a coastal–forest mosaic landscape. All observations were made through direct human observation, and each occurrence record includes the species observed, number of individuals, event date, associated season, and additional contextual information. Geographic coordinates have been simplified to one central location although actual observations have been made in locations throughout the processing facility area. The dataset provides a valuable record of avian diversity in a region experiencing industrial activity, helping track ecological change, support cumulative impact assessments, and inform conservation planning. Making these data openly accessible contributes to research, environmental reporting, national biodiversity strategies, and global efforts to understand species distributions and trends.</para>

Baseline Assessment of Insect Pollinators in Agroecosystems of Rwanda: a baseline perspective for pollinator conservation - Version 1.6

<para>Pollinators in Rwanda remain poorly studied despite their significant economic value, estimated to contribute over US $100 million annually to crop production. While some research has been conducted on honeybees, little is known about other pollinators such as butterflies, beetles, moths, and others. A major gap exists in comprehensive baseline data on pollinator diversity and distribution, making it difficult to design effective conservation strategies. We used sweep nets and pan traps to sample insect pollinators along 1 km transects in agricultural areas across 5 agroecosystems. Surveys documented pollinator abundance, diversity, and their associations with crop flowering stages and habitat structure. A total of 99 insect species were recorded, with Apis mellifera emerging as the predominant species across all sites, indicating that these agroecosystems continue to support essential pollination services. Hymenoptera dominated other orders, reflecting their critical role in crop pollination. Across all agroecosystems, pesticide application was consistently identified as the primary threat, with notably reduced pollinator abundance and richness in areas of frequent and recent pesticide use, signaling ecosystem stress. Pollinator presence varied with crop flowering stages and habitat structure, highlighting the importance of temporal and spatial factors in pollinator community dynamics. We observed that reducing pesticide pressure, raising awareness on pollinator importance and strengthening sustainable pest management are essential for pollinator conservation and agricultural resilience.</para>

Bird pollinator populations in Agroecosystems of Rwanda: a baseline perspective for pollinator conservation - Version 1.7

<para>Pollinators in Rwanda are poorly studied despite contributing over USD 100 million annually to crop production (Yocgo et al., 2023). Declining populations due to pesticide use, habitat loss, and invasive species threaten food security, yet baseline data on pollinator diversity and distribution remain limited.</para><para>We used point counts to survey pollinating birds along 1 km transects (Buckland et al., 1993). Observations were conducted within a 50 m radius during 10-minute intervals from 6:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. Data on crop types, weather, land use, pesticide application, invasive species, and habitat condition were recorded.</para><para>Five sunbird species were documented, with Variable Sunbird (Cinnyris venustus) most frequently observed. Pesticide application was the primary threat, correlating with low pollinator abundance. Invasive species (Lantana camara, Eucalyptus spp.) were widespread. Pollinator presence varied with crop flowering stages. Reducing pesticide pressure and strengthening sustainable pest management are essential for pollinator conservation and agricultural resilience.</para>

The dataset represents the status of Carbon stocks of tree biomass using an allometric equation in Kibate Forest (Ethiopia). Sixty-six plots (30m X 30m) were laid out at 100m interval distance along altitudinal gradients in five transects. Environmental variables, tree biomass, and C stock (Aboveground biomass, Belowground biomass, Total biomass, Aboveground C stock, Belowground C stock, Total Carbon stock, Human impact, and Livestock grazing) within 66 plots in Kibate Forest were assessed. A total of 125 species were recorded in Kibate Forest, out of which 20 species were tree forms. The list of species is published in another dataset which was done in Kibate Forest. Four species with large-sized individual tree contributed to more than half of the total stem density (57.8%). Eleven woody species (J. procera, N. congesta, I. mitis var. mitis, O. europaea subsp cuspidata, M. salicifolia, A. salicifolia, H. abyssinica, B. polystachya, M. melanophloeos, E. arborea, and O. rochetiana) contributed the highest to BA, stem density, and C stock in Kibate Forest. The C-stock distribution varied between plots related to the abundance of large trunk tree distribution mainly due to anthropogenic pressure.

This dataset captures detailed entomological observations on Aedes mosquitoes collected from both urban and peri-urban zones of Kinshasa city, the capital of the Democratic Republic of Congo. It includes standardized records such as species identification, sex, life stage, and reproductive status. Each entry is georeferenced to enable spatial analysis. Ensuring a comprehensive representation of Aedes presence and abundance across the study sites, a variety of sampling techniques were employed to target both adult and immature stages of Aedes populations. These included human landing catches (HLC), Prokopack aspirators, BG-Sentinel traps, and larval dipping technique. The data obtained provides a solid foundation to support vector surveillance in urban and peri-urban areas of Kinshasa city.

<para>This dataset comprises small mammal occurrence records collected across six regions in Namibia between November and December 2023. The objective of the study was to assess the diversity and distribution of small mammals across ecological gradients, to support biodiversity monitoring and conservation efforts across Namibia. At each sampling site, a 50 x 50 meter plot was established. Within each plot, fifteen Sherman traps were systematically positioned in three parallel transects, each 50 meters long and spaced 10 meters apart. Each transect contained five Sherman traps.</para><para>Before deployment, traps were cleaned, inspected, adjusted for sensitivity, and repaired if necessary. A bait mixture of oats and peanut butter was used, and traps were set in the late afternoon between 16:00 and 19:00. Traps were typically placed near shrubs, logs, or shaded microsites to improve capture success. Each Sherman trap was arranged with one end secured and the other open; the capture mechanism was activated when an animal triggered the latch inside the trap.</para><para>Traps were checked each morning between 6:00 and 9:00 AM for three consecutive days, and retrieved on the third morning. Captured individuals were identified to species level and assessed for sex and age. Each animal was weighed using a digital scale accurate to the nearest gram and measured for standard body metrics, including body length, tail length, and total length, using a string and ruler. Sex was determined by observing traits such as teats, a perforated vagina, or a protruding penis. To avoid unnecessary stress or harm, traps were closed during daylight hours.</para><para>All animals were marked using a black permanent marker for identification and released at the point of capture. The minimum number of individuals recorded per site was one, and the maximum was three.</para><para>Sampling encompassed a range of habitats, including dry savanna, semi-arid shrubland, and riparian zones, providing a broad representation of Namibia’s environmental diversity. The dataset includes records from Khomas, Oshikoto, Kunene, Karas, Zambezi, and Hardap regions, although other regions such as Kunene and Khomas were also sampled; however, traps didn’t capture anything.</para><para>Taxonomic coverage includes small mammal species from the families Muridae, Nesomyidae, and Macroscelididae. This dataset contributes to the growing body of biodiversity data for Namibia and may support future ecological modelling, conservation prioritisation, and long-term biodiversity assessments in the region</para>

Woody plants occurrence across Namibia, 2023 - Version 1.0

<para> This dataset comprises woody plant occurrence records collected across eight regions of Namibia: Kunene, Karas, Khomas, Kavango East, Oshana, Oshikoto, Zambezi, and Hardap, during the November to December 2023 field campaign. The purpose of the study was to assess the structure, composition, and diversity of woody vegetation communities along environmental gradients, providing baseline data for long-term vegetation monitoring, ecological modeling, and conservation planning across Namibia.
Woody plant surveys were systematically conducted within standardized 50 × 50-meter plots established at each sampling site. Within each plot, all woody plants that are 1.3m or above were assessed.
For each qualifying individual, the following parameters were documented:
Scientific species name, supplemented by vernacular (local or english) names where available,
DBH measuring tape,
Height, measured using the MeasureHeights mobile application,
Canopy structure, described using two standardized categories, Canopy 1 and Canopy 2, which refer to the vertical and horizontal complexity of the canopy.
Species identification was performed in the field using a combination of regional botanical field guides and the iNaturalist mobile application, ensuring accurate and consistent taxonomic resolution. For each plot, GPS coordinates of the central point were recorded using a Garmin handheld GPS unit, ensuring precise geolocation of observations.
A rapid sampling was also done in different plots, were trees were not measured but rather given a category. Tree abundance within the designated plot was quantified using a categorical scale ranging from 1 to 5, where a rating of 1 denoted the least prevalent species, and a rating of 5 indicated the species with the highest dominance. The rapid sampling was done to increase the spatial coverage within the time period of sampling and also to establish if eDNA metabarcoding will pick up what direct observation picked up.
The dataset is taxonomically rich and reflects the floristic composition typical of Namibia’s savannas, dry woodlands, and arid shrubland. Some of the families recorded are: Euphorbiaceae, Burseraceae, Rhamnaceae, Capparaceae, Loganiaceae, Myrtales, Sapindales, Lamiales and Ochnaceae.
This dataset provides high-resolution floristic and structural information on woody vegetation across Namibia’s key ecological zones. It is especially valuable for assessing the impacts of environmental gradients, land use, and climate variability on woody plant communities. Additionally, the data form an essential foundation for future studies incorporating plant trait analysis, carbon stock estimation, and vegetation classification using remote sensing.

<para>This dataset comprises bird occurrence records collected across seven regions in Namibia: Kunene, //Kharas, Khomas, Kavango East, Oshana, Oshikoto, and Zambezi, during the November to December 2023 field campaign. The primary objective of the study was to assess the diversity, distribution, and community structure of bird species along environmental gradients, contributing valuable baseline data for biodiversity monitoring, ecological modelling, and conservation planning across Namibia. Bird surveys were systematically conducted using standardised avian monitoring protocols tailored to habitat structure. Point counts were used in structurally heterogeneous environments (e.g., woodland and savanna mosaics), while line transects were deployed in more open habitats such as grasslands and semi-arid shrublands. Each survey originated from a vegetation plot (50 × 50 meters), extending along a 2-kilometre transect. A total of 33 transects were surveyed across Namibia’s key ecological zones. Surveys were conducted over three consecutive early mornings per transect, between 06:00 and 11:00, coinciding with peak avian activity periods. At 500-meter intervals, observers paused to conduct structured point counts. At each stop, an initial 3-minute acclimation period was observed to minimise disturbance, followed by an 8-minute observation window, split into two 4-minute intervals. All bird species seen or heard within a 50-meter radius were recorded, alongside metadata such as estimated distance from observer, behavioural notes, and individual counts. Species identification was performed in the field using a of regional bird guides to species level. At each transect, surveyors recorded the start and end times, GPS coordinates, and habitat descriptions to contextualise species occurrences within ecological and spatial frameworks. This dataset offers taxonomically rich and spatially explicit information on avian communities inhabiting Namibia’s savannas, floodplains, arid shrublands, and dry woodlands. It provides critical insights into how avian diversity and composition respond to environmental variability, land use patterns, and ecological gradients. In addition to supporting national conservation priorities, the dataset also lays a foundational baseline for future potential avian trait-based studies.</para>

The dataset represents the status of woody species composition and diversity along the Walga River of Wonchi, Southwestern Ethiopia. Fifty quadrats of 10m X 50m were laid at 500m interval through systematic sampling method along river line. Vegetation height (>2m) and DBH (>2.5m) of only tree species were measured, and altitude, ecological disturbance such as, grazing intensity and human impacts were included as main environmental variables at each of the sampled plots. The data was analyzed using different R statistical packages. Ninety-nine woody vascular plant species belong to 81 genera and 45 families were recorded in Walga riparian vegetation. Only 10% of species were endemic to Flora area.

This dataset represent the habitat quality of the Ethiopian wolf (Canis simensis) within the Simien Mountains National Park, Ethiopia. It was conducted between November 2010 and October 2012, the research measured variables influencing rodent distribution, including vegetation cover and physical attributes. Weak correlations were observed between livestock droppings and rodent burrows, as well as mole rat mounds. Notably, higher livestock dropping were associated with increased ground cover, indicating significant impacts on vegetation and rodent population. These disturbances adversely affect the Ethiopian wolf's prey base, highlighting the need for conservation measures to enhance habitat quality.

As part of the collaboration programmes between Gaea Seychelles and the Natural History Museum of Paris under the JRS biodiversity fund, an inventory of the fish species and aquatic macrocrustaceans in fresh water from the principal perennial rivers on the islands of Mahé and Praslin was conducted starting on February 19th to 24th and On Silhouette starting on April 17th to 21st.

This species occurrence observational dataset acquired from freshwater inventory North-west monsoon 2024 will be updated to:
1) Include spatio-temporal data of the same from 2003 till current.
2) Include habitat ecology
3) Abundance and invasiveness

By processing the data, we will also be able to learn some basic information on the ecology and biology of the major species and population structure.
Based on these preliminary findings, we will emphasise the primary tasks that need to be completed in order to finish the inventory and gain understanding of freshwater fauna,
in order to provide management and preservation strategies for the integrity of aquatic habitats.

Additionally, this study helped raise knowledge and capacity amongst Gaea Seychelles staff, participatory of staff of the following organisation; Ministry of Agriculture climate change and environment (MACCE), Seychelles Island Foundation (SIF), Seychelles Parks and Gardens’ Authority (SPGA), Anse-Boileau watershed, Terrestrial Restoration Action Society Seychelles (TRASS), Seychelles Broadcasting Corporation (SBC), University of Seychelles, Island conservation society (ICS) and volunteers regarding sample methods and the identification of freshwater fish and macrocrustaceans.

They were collected from 40 home gardens from May to September 2011. The specimens were collected using pitfall traps during two separate months and related sample composition to land use in the vicinity (1 ha plot, local scale, field data) and tree cover within 200 and 500 m radius zones (landscape scale, satellite data). The highest spider abundances were found when either the home garden or the surrounding had high tree cover and were lower in both the most tree-rich and tree-poor landscape-garden combinations.

Checklist of small mammals of West-Bugwe forest reserve, Uganda - Version 1.1

<para>The data on checklist of small mammals West-Bugwe Forest reserve was collected by the Forest Department of Uganda under the ‘Natural Forest Management and Conservation Project’ (No. 6100.37.42.015) and the project of ‘Institutional Support for the Protection of East African Biodiversity’ (UNO/RAF/006/GEF). These data were collected from 1993 to1995 and published in a series of reports edited by Howard and Davenport (1996).
The purpose of sampling the small mammals, as with the other taxa, was to compile as complete a species list as possible to enable comparison between sites and assist with the identification of conservation needs and priorities in Uganda's forests. Uganda supports an extremely high number of mammal species, second to Zaire in Africa and ranked ninth in the world (McNeely et al; 1990). Over 125 species from the mammalian orders Insectivora, Macroscelidea and Rodentia (excluding families Sciuridae, Anomaluridae and Hystricidae) are recorded from Uganda (Davies and Vanden Berghe, 1994); including three national and twelve Albertine Rift endemic species.
The data have been mobilized by the staff of the A Rocha Uganda and A Rocha International under the project "Raising the profile of data for the conservation of four forested African landscapes" funded by GBIF's BID Programme, and coordinated by A Rocha Kenya.
The mobilized data was based on records collected between May,1993 and March,1995 using a combination of break back and Sherman traps.</para>

<para>The herpetology database of the National Museum of Namibia (NMNW) contains both amphibians and reptiles, but this portion of the database only includes the amphibians. The data is occurrence-type, consisting primarily of specimens collected during the last two centuries, primarily from Namibia. This database also contains some tissue samples and observational data. The initial publication of this dataset is only a part of the collections housed under herpetology at the NMNW, but will be added to periodically as additional records are digitised and cleaned, and/or as new specimens are collected. The GBIF database will eventually to reflect a near-complete replica of the amphibians portion of the NMNW herpetology collection database.</para>
