説明
A collection of bird ringing data collected by Jeremy Lindsell during the course of his residence in the Budongo Forest at the Budongo Forest Project field station at Sonso, between October 1996 and May 2000. The work was conducted under a research permit from the Uganda National Council for Science and Technology. The data have been mobilized by the staff of the A Rocha Uganda and A Rocha International under the project "Raising the profile of data for the conservation of four forested African landscapes" funded by GBIF's BID programme, and coordinated by A Rocha Kenya.

プロジェクトデータ
A Rocha International is part of the eleven organisations that came together to mobilise, share and use biodiversity data across four African countries to help with the conservation of four forested African landscapes. These landscapes cover over 450,000 hectares of tropical forests in four countries where the A Rocha family is undertaking conservation work. The project includes five of the organisations belonging to the A Rocha family (i.e., A Rocha Uganda, A Rocha International, A Rocha Kenya, Eden Care Initiative-Nigeria, and A Rocha Ghana) as partners. Other partner organisations include; National Museum of Kenya, African Butterfly Research Institute (ABRI), Kenya Wildlife Service, National Forest Authority in Uganda, Council for Scientific Industrial Research- Food Research Institute in Ghana and A.P Leventis Ornithological Research Institute in Nigeria. With funding from JRS Biodiversity Foundation and European Union (https://european-union.europa.eu/) through the Biodiversity Information for Development (BID) program of GBIF, a regional project “Raising the profile of data for the conservation of four forested African landscapes” was initiated and its seeking to utilise biodiversity data to better conserve biodiversity-rich but threatened forests of Atewa in Ghana; key coastal forests of Kenya (Dakatcha, Taita Hills, Shimba Hills and Kaya Forests); Kwande and Oban-liku in Nigeria and Eastern Uganda key forests (West Bugwe and Igwe-Luvunya, South Busoga, Bukaleba, Mabira, Mukono, Mpanga, Mpigi and Zika Forest Reserves). The dataset “Ringing dataset of birds in Budongo Forest, western Uganda” sits outside the geographical foci of this project but provides a useful additional reference point for Uganda forests from the same time period.

Study Area Description | Budongo Forest Reserve is a central forest reserve within found in Masindi district in Western Uganda between 01°37′–02°03N and 31°22–31°46E. The reserve covers a total area of 79,300 hectares with an altitudinal range of 700 - 1270 m. |
研究の意図、目的、背景など(デザイン) | The occurrences reported here relate to a variety of mist netting and ringing activities including training and demonstration sessions, pilot work for bird community studies, and focal species work for an autecological study of Illadopsis albipectus. |

収集方法
The sampling method used for data reported here was mist netting. The sampling effort - including both time of open nets and net length - varied greatly from occasion to occasion according to the activity being undertaken (see design description). On some occasions a tape lure was used. Nets were all four shelf (c 3 metres) general passerine nets of either 12 or 18 metres in length. Captured birds were held in cotton bird bags and processed immediately. Principle measurements were wing length (maximum chord) and body mass (grammes). The age and sex of each bird was determined where possible. Each bird was fitted with a uniquely number metal ring from the Ringing Scheme of East Africa, usually on the right leg.
Study Extent | These data are an occurrence dataset of birds recorded by mist netting from Budongo Central Forest Reserve, in management compartments N2, N3 and N15. |
---|---|
Quality Control | Species identification was carried out by reference to Brown et al. (1982), Urban et al. (1986), Fry et al. (1988) and Keith et al. (1992), Zimmerman et al (1996), and van Perlo (1995). The order, taxonomy and nomenclature have been revised according to the HBW and BirdLife International checklist taxonomy (del Hoyo and Collar 2014, 2016). The location of net sites was recorded by reference to their position on a c 100 m x 100 m research grid of trails that were maintained in the forest by the Budongo Conservation Field Station. These locations have subsequently been converted to geographic coordinates using a GIS map of the trail grid. |
Method step description:
- Jeremy Lindsell recording mist netting and ringing data during the course of ecological research in Budongo Forest between October 1996 and May 2000. The current dataset comprises all records of birds that were mist netted by J. Lindsell during this time. An electronic copy of the database and the original field note books for the records were made available for inclusion in GBIF by Jeremy Lindsell. The species names were updated to modern taxonomy by aligning the names and regionally appropriate forms (subspecies) with the HBW and BirdLife International checklist taxonomy (del Hoyo and Collar 2014, 2016) paying particular attention to potential taxonomic splits and lumps that had occurred since the original data were collected. Net locations were converted from their original reference to the forest research trail grid to geographic coordinates using a GIS.
