Description

This dataset forms part of the National Herbarium of Namibia's database that contains specimen records for Namibia's flora. This occurrence dataset is restricted to flora collected within the south eastern parts of Namibia and is based on specimen collections housed in the National Herbarium of Namibia (WIND) and digitized onto its BRAHMS database. The initial publication of this dataset is only a part of the collections that have been digitized but will be added to periodically as additional records are collected and added. Occurrence data for Pelargonium species were withheld due to potential discrepancies related to possible incorrect identification.

Namibia is a biodiverse country with a large protected area network. However, a lack of baseline data has resulted in many of Namibia's important biodiversity areas being overlooked and excluded from protection. South eastern Namibia contains part of the Gariep Centre of Endemism, but largely falls outside any protected areas. The Warmbad District was selected as a potential Important Plant Area (IPA) in Namibia. The area is poorly surveyed and the aim is review existing data, collect new data in order to update species distributions and quantify endemism and biodiversity potential of this area to ultimately designate an appropriate conservation status or standard.

Titre Gariep Endemism Species information for Conservation Action (GESICA)
Financement This is a collaborative project between the Namibia Nature Foundation, the National Botanical Research Institute and the National Museum of Namibia which is funded by the JRS Biodiversity Foundation.
Description du domaine détude / de recherche South eastern Namibia forms part of the Gariep Centre of Endemism and borders the Succulent Karoo Biome on the west and is part of the greater Nama Karoo Biome as well as four major geological formations.
Description du design 1. Establish a baseline and fill biodiversity gaps for plants, arthropods and small vertebrates for south eastern Namibia 2. Undertake taxonomic and conservation research of plants, arthropods and small vertebrates for south eastern Namibia 3. Data sharing on open access platforms and conservation platforms 4. Designations of an area within south easter Namibia to an appropriate conservation status or standard.

Méthodes déchantillonnage

Standard herbarium specimen collection, digitization and data management procedures.

Etendue de létude This is not a particular study, but rather an ongoing targeted sampling and deposition into the National Herbarium of Namibia by its staff, research associates and multiple local and international researchers. The JRS funded research project has significantly contributed towards updating biodiversity data within this area.
Contrôle qualité Local and international botanists identify the material to species level upon collection, additional redeterminations are done by various experts as the material is used for various taxonomic studies. Paulina Fendinat standardized the data according tor DarwinCore and formatted the file accordingly. Quanita Daniels did final checks regarding DarwinCore field mapping, metadata and data publication.

Description des étapes de la méthode:

  1. 1. Extract existing data from BRAHMS 2. Verify data on database with that of specimen labels (Paulina Fendinat, Lovisa Kandenge) 3. Review data for quality and errors (Paulina Fendinat, Lovisa Kandenge) 4. Format data according to DarwinCore (Paulina Fendinat) 5. Checking and publication (Quanita Daniels)
